Questions About $400 Million Gift to Stanford

Phil Knight gives $400 million dollars to Stanford. The money is for an endowment that will pay a full ride scholarship for 100 students per year. This scholarship is being offered to top students at undergraduate colleges both in the U.S. and internationally.

This sounds good at first, but there are other considerations than just the huge donation. The big question is; do these people, who are already top students, need the money. They are already entrenched in academia at this point, and perhaps they would do well with or without Stanford. And the other question is; do these candidates really need the money? Would they be attending Stanford without this gift, as they have proven themselves worthy of present investment in future outcomes.
