When Ashwathy Venugopal was in Class 8, her teachers told her about events her school was participating in, but she couldn't attend because she wasn't old enough.
That's how the Indian woman felt when she saw photos of students with then-President APJ Abdul Kalam.
"That missed opportunity haunted her for long," she tells Onmanorama.
That's when she and her husband, Sandeep, decided to create Avasarshala, or the "hub of opportunities," a website and app that helps kids and their parents keep up with events in their schools and extracurricular activities.
The site lists competitions, scholarships, grants, Olympiads, fests, and inter-school events, and parents can sign their kids up for weekly updates.
The site also partners with organizers and promoters of events.
"As much as 75% of our active users are girls," says Sandeep, who handles product and operations at Avasarshala.
"Also, 55% of listed opportunities are used by girls."
