Azalea Ray is a senior at the University of Minnesota this fall, and she's one of 12 students to receive a $5,000 scholarship from the Virginia Community Foundation.
The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports the scholarship is open to any student who's pursuing a degree in the liberal arts.
Ray is from Virginia, Minnesota, which is about 90 miles north of St. Paul.
The foundation's executive director calls it "an investment in our community for a better tomorrow."
