Grant Funding Received For Jay Tennis Courts

A community in Maine is getting new tennis courts in the name of a man who died in the sinking of the El Faro.

The HollandStrong Community Foundation has been awarded a $206,624 grant from the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry through the Land and Water Conservation Fund to tear down three tennis courts in Jay and replace them with three ADA-compliant courts with LED lights and walkways, reports the Portland Press Herald.

"This is an exciting turning point for the HollandStrong Community Foundation after several years of painstakingly working towards funding for this project to honor the memory of Michael Holland," the foundation's chairwoman wrote in a Facebook post Wednesday.

Holland was a senior at Jay High School when the cargo ship he was on sank off the coast of the Bahamas on Oct. 1, 2015.

His mother, Deb Roberts, has been working to raise funds for the tennis courts for years.

In April, voters in Jay, Livermore Falls, and Livermore Falls approved a $45,000 reserve fund for the project.

The HollandStrong Community Foundation has provided scholarships to graduating seniors from three area school districts.
