Ben Franklin Senior Killed in Bus Crash Remembered as Rising Star, Lgbtq+ Activist

A 17-year-old in New Orleans died over the weekend after she was hit by a bus while walking home from work, the Times-Picayune reports.

Belle Adelman-Cannon was working a shift at the Grow Dat Youth Farm, a summer camp for at-risk youth, on Saturday afternoon when she and a female co-worker were hit by a bus as they crossed a street.

They were taken to a hospital, where they died on Sunday.

The driver of the bus has not been charged, and the New Orleans Police Department is investigating.

Belle's mother, Laura Adelman-Cannon, tells WWL that her daughter was a "wonderful human" who "was really proud of who they were and willing to go up to the state capitol, which is a scary place, among people who literally hated them, and stand up and fight for queer kids."

Belle had recently protested the state's "Don't Say Gay Bill," which bars people from discriminating against same-sex couples.

"People need to help other people in need because this isn't going to be the last time something scary like this happens," Belle wrote on her Facebook page.
