Eastern North Carolina's Darden College of Education has selected 20 students to receive a total of $7.25 million in scholarships over the next five years.
The recipients of the college's African American Scholars' Program will receive $40,000 each over their time in school, plus mentorship and professional development opportunities, study abroad, and field experiences, reports the News & Observer.
They will then return to the eastern part of the state to teach for at least two years.
The program was launched in the fall of 2021 through a donation from the Anonymous Trust.
Its aim is to diversify the teacher pipeline by focusing its recruitment on economically distressed counties.
