Muslim Entrepreneur Opens Paths for Artists

A New Jersey artist who goes by the name Mehwish Malik has been named one of America's most promising young artists by the Council on Contemporary Art.

The honor comes with a number of perks, including a full scholarship to study at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, free transportation to and from her shows, and the ability to have her work displayed at the White House, among other things, reports the Los Angeles Times.

Malik, who is Muslim, grew up in New Jersey and started her own business, Rehmah Islamic Expressions, in 2013.

She says art has always served as a "constant source of inspiration" for her, but "as a Muslim woman, navigating the art world, she had encountered challenges such as stereotypes and limited opportunities for exhibitions or hosting art workshops," per a profile on her website.

"Despite these hurdles, she remained committed to using her art as a means of healing and a platform for social justice and change."
