The American School Counselor Association recommends a student-to- counselor ratio of 250-to-1, but that's expected to rise to 366-to-1 in Wisconsin over the next few years as the state's population continues to grow.
That's why a new law signed by Gov.
Scott Walker last week is designed to make it easier for school districts to bring in counselors of their own, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
Under Act 196, licensed marriage and family therapistswho are already "widely accepted as appropriately qualified"will be able to obtain licenses from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and then be hired directly by school districts.
"Rather than creating a costly new government-run program, this legislation recognizes the pool of highly trained Marriage and Family Therapists who are ready and able to support our students today," says Republican state Rep.
David Steffen, who co-authored the bill with Sen.
Jesse James.
