Where Gun Violence Is Common, Some Students Say Physical Safety Is a Top Concern

"If you're outside, you don't really feel comfortable, you don't really get to relax," a student at Minneapolis' North Community High School tells NPR.

"And it would feel like I'm talking to an alien, basically."

The student is referring to the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Deshaun Hill Jr.

two years ago just blocks from the school.

Hill was the quarterback of the football team and the youngest person ever to play in the Minnesota state championship game, per the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

"That was my best friend, so we did everything with each other," says another student, Kahlil Brown.

"I feel like that's the toughest thing, just knowing that he's not physically by my side anymore."

A second member of the football team was also shot in the legs last spring, though he survived.

"We go through it so much that it is normal here," says another student, Jalen Beard.

The federal government is investing billions in fighting gun violence, but in Minneapolis, students say there's a lack of support.

The city ended its contract with the city's police force and pulled its school resource officers from schools.
