The Hong Kong Junior Police Force's annual science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics competition was launched in 1974 to encourage young people to apply STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) knowledge and skills, as well as creative thinking, problem solving, and logical reasoning, reports the South China Morning Post.
This year's theme was "Anti-deception and establishing an Anti-deception Smart City," and more than 145 students from more than 50 schools took home 88 awards at a May 11 ceremony.
The winning teams were tasked with designing a "smart city" that is free of scams, efficient in terms of transportation, safe in terms of information literacy, and safe in terms of the environment, per the Junior Police Force's website.
A police rep tells the Post that the scams are on the rise, with Hong Kong losing $9.18 billion to them per day, or about $25 million per day, or one deception case per 13 minutes.
