Kristi Noem has declared a state of emergency in three counties in the wake of last week's tornadoes, which killed at least 11 people and injured dozens more, the Rapid City Journal reports.
The state has declared a state of emergency in Ogallala, Minnehaha, and Minnehaha counties.
Noem said in a statement that the declaration is a direct result of last week's tornadoes, which were caused by unusually strong winds and hail.
"This is a time of great need in our state, and I urge all South Dakotans to join me in offering assistance and support to those in need," Noem said.
"This is a time of great challenge, but it is also a time of great opportunity."
Noem said in a statement that she has asked the state's emergency management agency and the National Weather Service to provide assistance to people affected by the tornadoes.
