Florida high school senior Emily De Los Reyes has been working hard to get to where she wants to be.

De Los Reyes, who plans to attend Florida State University in Tallahassee in the fall, says she's always wanted to be an aeronautical engineer, but she hasn't been able to get into any of the colleges she's interested in because of financial constraints, the Miami Herald reports.

Now she's hoping to change that.

The 16-year-old, who's the first in her family to go to college, has been awarded a $50,000 scholarship from the Florida FLVS Foundation, which works to help low-income students get an education in Florida's public schools.

"I want to be an aeronautical engineer so I can use my skills to help other people," De Los Reyes tells the Herald.

"I want to be a doctor so I can help other people."

The foundation, which has given out more than $22,000 in scholarships over the last few years, says it's focusing on four areas: math, science, literacy, and career and technical education.

It's looking to raise $104,000 by Sept.

1, 2024, which will be matched by the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations.
