South Dakota's Rapid City and Sioux Falls are two of 13 communities to receive a child care grant from the Governor's Office of Economic Development, and they're using it to do something about the child care shortage in their communities, the Rapid City Journal reports.

Rapid City will hold a series of child care provider boot camps this year, with most of its $255,000 grant going to subgrants to help existing providers get licensed with the state.

The other portion of its grant will go to subgrants to help existing providers expand their facilities to become licensed with the state.

"Child care workers don't always identify as a small business owner, therefore they're not necessarily seeking the same resources other small businesses and entrepreneurs are," Brienne Maner, executive director with Start Up Sioux Falls, tells the Journal.

"We're providing tools for success and creating a community of individuals who can help support each other as they move forward."
