Sam Altman'S High School English Teacher Hoped He Wouldn'T Go into Technology

When he was a high-schooler, Sam Altman was "so creative" that his English teacher hoped he wouldn't end up in tech, Andy Abbott tells Bloomberg in a profile of the OpenAI CEO.

"I remember thinking, 'I hope he doesn't go into technology,' and this is an embarrassing confession'I hope he doesn't go into technology,'" Abbott says.

Altman went on to edit the yearbook, play water polo, and compete in Model United Nations, among other things.

"Everyone knew that this guy's better at most things than most of us excelled at, and he has built his career on convincing people to chance on what he believes in," Abbott says.

Altman went on to become a donor at the private John Burroughs School in St.

Louis, where he is now head.

Business Insider notes that Altman's recent troubles include an embarrassing spat with Scarlett Johansson and reports about OpenAI stifling criticism with its restrictive non-disclosure agreement.
