James and Ollie Lou Pearson lost their fathers at a young age and were raised by their mothers, and now they're giving back.
The former teachers in Henderson County, Tenn., are offering scholarships to minority students at a local high school.
"They came back to Henderson County with a dream," Franklin McMeen, president of the Community Foundation of West Tennessee, tells WREG.
"A dream to educate, educate promising black students."
Studies show that only about 37% of black students go to college, and James Pearson says it's time for a change.
"We hope that we have students that are interested enough in those four that they would do as the others have done and work toward those scholarships," he says.
The Ollie Pearson Scholarship, which began in 2017, is in honor of Ollie Lou, a former music teacher who has played for churches, even while in college.
"Now, I just want to give back to some of the students who might be in the same predicament that I was," she says. Read the Entire Article
