Nearly 5,000 kids in the New York area will get a boost in their academic and sports lives thanks to the Heisman Trophy Fund for Youth Development.

The fund, a partnership between the Heisman Trophy Trust and the New York Community Trust, awarded $1.2 million in grants this month, NBC New York reports.

"These grants represent a meaningful step toward equalizing the playing field through greater access and exposure to sports in underserved communities," Roderick Jenkins, who oversees the youth development grantmaking for the New York Community Trust, says in a press release.

This year's recipients include high school athletes, as well as students with physical, emotional, or intellectual disabilities.

"The lessons learned on the field: discipline, focus, teamwork, and leadership will benefit these kids off the field and throughout their lives," says Michael Comerford, president of the Heisman Trophy Trust. Read the Entire Article
