"It's really exciting to see students be able to learn that welding and manufacturing can have an artistic flair," the executive director of the Center for Visual Arts in Wausau, Wis., tells WSAW.
Students from the alternative high school's welding program helped transform the center's outdoor learning studio into a public art installation featuring welded garden art pieces created by students.
"It gave me a stress-free environment just to communicate'Hey, I need a minute.
I'm going to sketch some ideas,'" says Nyx Esteroy, a junior at the school.
"It feels amazingyou feel like you could do anything."
The project was a collaborative effort between the school, the welding program, the Community Foundation of Northcentral Wisconsin, and the Center for Visual Arts.
"The main goal of public art is to help people feel connected here," says Rodriguez-Lee.
"I hope that the students see themselves in these pieces and that the community recognizes all of their hard work."
