When Dave Peterson first saw a group of teachers directing traffic at a Florida high school, his "inside voice said that's not right," he tells the Suncoast News. That's how he ended up volunteering in Odessa, where he's worked as a school crossing guard since October 2021. Since then, he's helped more than 500 students cross to and from school daily, and was recently named Florida's 2022 School Crossing Guard of the Year by the state's Department of Transportation, the Tampa Bay Times reports. "You'd be surprised how attentive the kids are—they want to do the right thing and they take direction really well," says Peterson, a father of three and grandfather of eight. "Also when we talk to them directly, we thank them for following the rules, and we use our positive influence to get them to do what we want," he adds.
